Jing Zhu
Jing Zhu is a common law and commercial barrister, specialising in personal injuries and employment law.
Jing accepts briefs to advise on or appear in all areas of personal injury, insurance law, employment law and general commercial matters.
Jing regularly appears in lengthy and complex Supreme and County Court jury trials, and regularly appears unled in Serious Injury hearings and in the Magistrates’ Court. She appears in VCAT in sexual harassment and discrimination cases, as well as the Federal Court in employment law matters. She has also appeared in judicial review matters in the Supreme Court. She is often involved in complex multi-party disputes and regularly represents parties at mediation and settlement conferences.
She was Barrister of the Year Finalist in the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards 2018 as well as the recipient of the Women Barristers Association Scholarship to attend the Australian Women Lawyers’ Conference in Sydney in 2018.
Prior to joining the Bar, Jing gained experience as a solicitor acting for both injured people and the Victorian WorkCover Authority. She began her career at Holding Redlich where she worked in the employment law team and as a personal injuries solicitor practising in a range of areas including workers’ compensation, transport accidents, crimes compensation, hearing loss, medical negligence, public liability and product liability.
She then practised as a VWA Panel solicitor at Russell Kennedy where she managed files ranging from common law negligence matters to statutory benefits disputes.
She taught Evidence and Civil Procedure subjects at Monash University. She also regularly presents papers at Legalwise seminars.
She is a native Chinese language speaker, being fluent in Mandarin and Shanghai dialect.
Jing sits on the LIV’s Workers’ Compensation Committee. She is formerly a Councillor of the Law Institute of Victoria and an Executive Committee member of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association.
She is a Nationally Accredited Mediator.
She read with Bruce McKenzie and her senior mentor was Jacinta Forbes QC, now Justice Forbes of the Supreme Court. She also undertook work experience with Samantha Marks QC, now Judge Marks of the County Court.
