John has post graduate qualifications from Oxford. Since his admission, he has practised as a trial and appellate advocate particulary as a plaintiff's counsel. John has practiced as a mediator since 1995 and has been involved in many mediations as either counsel or mediator. John is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of "The Laws of Australia" and has written extensively.

Selection of cases

* Many medical negligent cases including cerebral palsy cases.
* In the Pyrenees' case, the High Court fixed on the liability of local authorities.
* Tobacco and asbestos litigation in the Supreme Court.
* Superannuation disputes including total and permanent disability claims. In Kawka's case, indemnity costs were awarded.
* In Brisbane v Cross, the liability of proprietors adjoing a highway was determined.
* In McPherson & Kelly v Prunty, co-terminous liability in respect of both contract and tort was accepted.
* In Cooper v Commonwealth of Australia, liability for repetitive injury claims was determined after a five week international study.
* In Rosa v Galbally & O'Bryan, the liability of a solicitor for negligent treatment and advice was determined.
